What is the Assisted Living Waiver Program?

The Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) Program is designed to help Medi-Cal-eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities transition from a nursing facility to a community-based, home-like setting. This program enables individuals to live in an environment that offers personalized care while maintaining their dignity and independence.

Who Qualifies for the ALW Program?

To qualify for the ALW Program, individuals must:

Be 21 years or older.
Have full-scope Medi-Cal eligibility with zero share of cost.
Require a level of care equivalent to that provided in a nursing facility.
Be willing to reside in an assisted living facility or subsidized public housing.
Live in or be willing to relocate to one of the participating counties in California.

How the Program Works

The ALW Program facilitates safe and timely transitions from nursing facilities to community-based settings, such as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) or Adult Residential Care Facilities (ARF). Participants must cover the cost of their room and board, but the program covers the costs associated with their care, making it a financially viable option for many.
